Although it seems like high school is pretty much over, its important for students to be able to survive and thrive through this last term so they can keep their grades up and maintain stability. If seniors can look at a few of the common problems they may face, theyll have a better idea of how to survive spring semester. 1. College letters One of the things that will affect high school seniors the most this term is the arrival of college acceptance (and denial) letters. This will be a big issue for any student who applied to a college or university. Once students know their options for attendance, they will have the big decision of narrowing down their choice to just one school. Each student will have a different experience, and its important that they are able to maintain their concentration throughout the anticipation and decision-making process (READ: Tips from a Fullerton tutor: how to overcome senioritis). 2. Maintaining focus One way students can maintain focus is to get a little bit of help with organization. This may come from any number of apps, their classroom teacher, a parent, tutor, or study group. Its important that students think about both the small picture and the big one. Students will have any number of assignments, tests, and quizzes that they have to complete this week but they should also look at the remainder of the academic year as a whole and make sure theyre meeting all of their goals. Most seniors will be enrolled in an AP course, and will still have to maintain their focus so they can perform well on that exam in May (READ: Best 5 math apps for high school students). 3. Staying within a routine Seniors are encouraged to stick to the routine that has been working for them up until now. Once students know they have been accepted into college, it can be easy to give into the temptations of senioritis and stop trying altogether. However, students who have a strong dip in GPA right at the end of their high school career may be denied the opportunity for scholarship-based financial aid or graduation honors. Additionally, seniors are encouraged to remember that their university acceptance is conditional; meaning that if their GPA changes significantly, the college may revoke their acceptance. Students can stay within their routine by continuing to meet with their tutor and study group, continuing to participate in any volunteer or after school clubs, and arranging for social time on the weekends. 4. Getting ready for next year At this point, seniors shouldnt look too far into the future when it comes to making specific plans because it may distract them from their current applications. However, there are a few things seniors need to look at sooner rather than later. Financial aid and scholarship applications will require immediate attention and students will need to make sure they have done everything required to enroll in their chosen university. Other than that, students are encouraged to make a checklist with due dates for everything they need to do during the summer so they can get started as soon as high school ends (READ: 4 differences between high school and college that may catch you by surprise). 5. Spend quality time with friends and family One of the most important things seniors can do is simply spend quality time with friends and family who they wont see as much next year. Most college freshman will be making all new friends in a few months so its nice to enjoy current high school friendships so they can survive the distance of college life. Additionally, when students are off at college, they may miss their family more than they think. Spring semester is a great time to participate in social activities with family and friends before going off to the big adventure that is the university experience. Try doing some workouts while you get your work doneâ€"the best type of multitasking there is. Studies have shown that sitting all day isn’t so great for your health. This is because when we sit, we burn less calories. So, if you sit at a desk for 8 hours, that’s 8 hours of not burning any calories. To eliminate this problem, ditch the rolling desk chair for a stability ball. Now, although it’s fun to do, don’t just bounce on the ball all day while you work. Sitting on a stability ball will strengthen your core.  Do a few crunches every so often to keep your body active while you sit. Bell curve is the graph generated when data on the horizontal X-axis is plotted against amount of data on vertical Y-axis. Bell shaped curve is also called the Normal Distribution curve and is generated to analyze the given set of information. Example 1: In a classroom, 68% of students weight are between 45kg and 65kg. Assuming this data is normally distributed, what are the mean and the standard deviation? Mean can be calculated by taking the average of the maximum and the minimum numbers. Mean = (45 + 65) / 2 = 110/2. So, Mean = 55kg 68% is 1 standard deviation on either side of the Mean. So, 2 total standard deviations on the Bell curve! This is the Empirical Rule. Hence, 1 Standard Deviation = (65 45)/ 2 = 20/2 = 10 1 Standard Deviation = 10kg Examples 2: In a classroom, 99.7% of the scores of an exam are between 76 and 94 points. Assuming this data is normally distributed, what are the mean and the standard deviation? Mean can be calculated by taking the average of the maximum and the minimum numbers. My Experience at University of Massachusetts-Amherst

My Experience at University of Massachusetts-Amherst Tayla received her bachelors degree in finance in 2012 from University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She specializes in algebra tutoring, geometry tutoring, and more. Read on for her review of her experience at University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Tayla: The University of Massachusetts, Amherst has a large beautiful campus, in a rural area. They have a public transportation system to take you all across campus (its a 40-minute walk from one end to the other), and the buses are free for all students. The buses can also take you to the surrounding areas which include shopping, downtowns, and neighboring schools. I felt safe on campus; they have emergency telephone stations spread throughout campus, as well as their own police department on campus. I would say due to the rural area of Amherst, one may want to own a car. A bike is also helpful, but only an option for so many months out of the year due to cold weather and snow/icy conditions. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Tayla: Being that the school is so large, most of the introductory courses have 300+ students, and you are able to meet with the teaching assistants for extra support. However, as you move up in your major the classes become much smaller, and it is easy to access professors during office hours. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Tayla: UMass has the best dining experiences, with their award-winning dining commons and chefs! The options are vast, and I heard they recently opened up a new dining hall with all healthy/alternative options. As for dorm life, the campus is very large with many housing areas. They also have a section for apartments and special housing for honors students. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Tayla: Majors and programs that are best supported are the STEM majors and the Isenberg School of Management (which I attended). Most School of Management students had to apply into the school and take prerequisites. I applied into the School of Management and majored in finance. I would say the university did a good job of supporting my area of study. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Tayla: It was easy for me to meet people and make friends as a freshman. The university sets up a very social atmosphere for the first-year students so that they can make friends and have a great social life. I would say, however, that transfer students maystruggle socially with the transition to a new school. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Tayla: The Isenberg School of Management had its own career center that was separate from the rest of the university, and it was pretty helpful. They held many career fairs and many reputable companies recruit on campus. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Tayla: UMass Amherst is home to the tallest library in the world, the W.E.B. Dubois library with over 20 floors. The library is open 24 hours and is equipped with a tutor/learning resource center, caf, and many floors and areas to study. The lower levels can get crowded and more social-like, but the upper floors have designated quiet areas and you can usually always find a place to study. Other areas, like classroom buildings, dorms, and student lounges are also areas where people can study. Describe the surrounding town. Tayla: UMass has an exchange program with four other highly accredited schools in the surrounding area. They include Amherst College, Holyoke, Smith, and Hampshire; and you can take classes at any of these institutions. There are also events that are held at these schools, in addition to downtown Amherst and Amherst Center.
